During the five days of the “1 Minute Documentary” Workshop at twofour54 tadreeb academy there were some theory and practical exercises facilitated by Helen Scott, a documentary filmmaker and a media consultant at Thomson Foundation.
The theory exercises involved how to plan shoots, develop research skills, explore different visual techniques and develop documentary ideas. The practical exercises involved, Interviewing, directing the camera on location and shooting scripts. They also shot three movies during the course, one outdoor and two indoors, and they had the opportunity to edit their movies by using Final Cut Pro and iMovie.
The workshop allowed all the attendees to direct their own movies on the child. The resultant movies are now part of the “1 Minute Doc” category competition at the Anasy Documentary Awards. At the end of the workshop each attendant provided feedback and proposed implantation of extensive courses on editing, requested for more sessions on photography and asked for extension to the workshop time period.

Helen Scott was the instructor for the “Introduction to Documentary Production” course scheduled for 7th and 14th, 14th -18th March 2010. She has just been involved in a project which encourages the youth to make 90 second films so she was the ideal person to help prepare the candidates for the “1 Minute Documentary”.
Helen trained as a print journalist and worked for the Daily Mail, one of Britain's biggest selling national newspapers. She moved into television, initially working as a news journalist, then moving into current affairs and documentaries. She worked as a producer/director at Yorkshire Television and made dozens of films. One of them, 'Women Who Kill' was nominated for a 'Grierson Award', and helped change the way the authorities dealt with domestic violence. She ended up as Controller of Factual Programs at Yorkshire Television, with a staff of 40, making programs for all the major broadcasters. Now a freelance, Helen combines program making with consultancy and training. She has worked for the Thomson Foundation for 20 years, training all over the world. Most recently she has been involved in delivering the Inquirer Award training in the Middle East, and has worked in Pakistan and Nigeria.
